Best Sights & Activities -(Art Museums)
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences
(Sights & Activities - Art Museums)
8949 Wilshire BlvdBeverly Hills CA 90211 310-247-3000
Description:
BEVERLY HILLS. Founded in 1927, this organization is responsible for that yearly shindig known as the Oscars. Inside, two exhibition areas are open to the public, and each contains an array of big-screen-related memorabilia and oddities from stereoscopic viewers to movie posters to "behind the scenes" photographs. The big draw, though, is a huge theater that features a regular schedule of film screenings, which are often paired with fascinating lectures. A must for any film buff.
Armand Hammer Museum of Art and Cultural Center
(Sights & Activities - Art Museums)
10899 Wilshire BlvdLos Angeles CA 90024 310-443-7000
Description:
With a permanent collection that consists mostly of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, this museum might seem of limited appeal. However, a schedule of changing exhibits and frequent special programs makes this a very popular destination. Exhibits drawn from the Daumier collection, as well as from the university's graphic arts center, provide plenty of variety, and there are regular movie premiers, outdoor performances, and poetry readings. Admission is free on Thursdays.
Barnsdall Art Park and Hollyhock House
(Sights & Activities - Art Museums)
4800 Hollywood BlvdHollywood CA 90027 323-644-6269
Description:
EAST HOLLYWOOD. Barnsdall Art Park is a bit unusual as a park, given that its most prominent feature isn't nature. Rather, it promotes cultural programs and delivers arts-related offerings to the public. Among the attractions are galleries, studios, a theater, and sculpture gardens. In addition, the park is home to Frank Lloyd Wright's 1921 Hollyhock House. This structure, Wright's first in LA, sought to find an architecural vocabulary for residences in Southern California. Rooftop terraces and outdoor living spaces merge with the interior, taking advantage of the climate and the views. Tours of the house are available.
Bergamot Station Arts Center
(Sights & Activities - Art Museums)
2525 Michigan AveSanta Monica CA 310-829-5854
Description:
SANTA MONICA. This unique complex, housed in a historic train depot, is home to the Santa Monica Museum of Art, plus numerous art galleries, shops and services, and a café. You'll find plenty to occupy you, probably for the better part of the day. The museum exhibits works from emerging and established contemporary artists, and there are usually two shows at any given time, including a room size multi-media installation. There are over 25 galleries to browse, and several boutiques to scour for that perfect gift. When you need a break, the café will set you up with a glass of wine and a gourmet sandwich or salad.
