Bradbury Building
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
304 S BroadwayLos Angeles CA 90013 213-626-1893
Description:
DOWNTOWN. Built by silver mining millionaire Lewis Bradbury in 1893, this five-story building was designed as "futuristic," and it was featured in the 1946 "D.O.A." and 1982's "Blade Runner." Today it serves as an office building, but the beautiful, ornate wrought-iron railings, oak paneling, glazed and unglazed brick walls, marble and tile floors, two open-cage elevators, and a crowning atrium with a skylight remain as a testament to architect George Wyman's work. The lobby level is open to visitors. Tours of the upper levels are available by appointment.
Forest Lawn Glendale
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
1712 S Glendale AveGlendale CA 323-254-3131
Description:
GLENDALE. This is such a unique and beautiful spot that it would be worth a visit, even if it wasn't the final resting place of numerous celebrities. The 300-acre cemetery is unlike any you've ever seen, with rolling lawns, hidden gardens, a pond with swans, and a maze of paths. The statuary alone is stunning, and if you're an architecture buff, you'll love the elaborate mausoleums and chapels. Paintings and stained glass art are housed in many of the buildings as well. Pick up a map at the entry gates - it's amazingly easy to get lost here.
Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
6300 Forest Lawn DrLos Angeles CA 90068 323-254-7251
Description:
GRIFFITH PARK. This smaller sibling of the original Glendale cemetery has just as much to recommend it, just on a more modest scale. While the Glendale location features an abundance of Renaissance-style statuary and architecture, this location has more in the way of statues of former presidents and historic reproductions of American architecture. On your way through the gate, stop at the information booth to pick up a map, which you will definitely need to find your way back out! Notables interred here include Bette Davis, Lucille Ball, Telly Savalas, Liberace, Freddie Prinze, and Andy Gibb.
Hollywood Forever Cemetery
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
6000 Santa Monica BlvdLos Angeles CA 90038 323-469-1181
Description:
HOLLYWOOD ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT. Hollywood Forever, dating to 1899, is the final resting spot for numerous celebrities. Among them are Clifton Webb, Cecil B. DeMille, Mel Blanc, Rudolph Valentino, Peter Finch, Peter Lorre, both Douglas Fairbanks Sr and Jr, Jayne Mansfield, Janet Gaynor, John Huston, and Darla Hood (the original Little Rascals Darla) and Carl Switzer (Alfalfa in Little Rascals). Maps are available at the main gate.
Pierce Brothers Westwood Memorial Park
(Sights & Activities - Historic Sites)
1218 Glendon AveLos Angeles CA 90024 310-474-1579
Description:
WESTWOOD. This cemetery near UCLA is small and easy to miss, and has only one entrance. But for particular stars' gravesites, there's no better stop - this is the final resting place of legends like Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Truman Capote, and Walter Matthau. And, just like the rest of LA real estate, it's pricey - plots can go for $85K and up.
